“It’s been a week,” someone spoke. I could not tell who.
“Feels a lot longer than that.” Josiah wrapped his blanket tighter around him.
I bit my lip. “I wonder how much longer we have.”
Hunter sighed. “Definitely makes you notice how much we took for granted.”
“A home,” Enoch spoke quietly.
“Warm showers.” Carmen shivered from the cold.
“Food!” Josiah fell backward dramatically.
Byrant twisted, acting like he was going to punch Josiah in the stomach, causing him to roll out of the way with a jerk.
Some of the teens chuckled or gave an amused snort.
“A family.” I looked into the fire.
We fell silent again.
“What is your family like?” Elizabeth turned to me.
I shrugged. “Simple, I guess. My older sister left for college two years ago. Since then, I’ve been the only child.” I took a deep breath as I remembered my family. “We never had a whole lot of money, but we never struggled to pay the bills or buy groceries.”
“Same,” Danielle spoke from beside me. She caught eye contact with her younger brother, Josiah, across the fire. “We would have family game nights all the time at our house. I remember playing games at the table for hours till we were too tired to think. It felt like David won every game.” She fell silent as she mentioned her older brother.
“We will get him back.” I nodded at her, but it did not stop the tear from falling down her face.
