“Wait. Hold up,” I cut in. “So you’re saying it is in English? We just have to decode it?”
“Exactly!” Jack seemed relieved that we were understanding. “We need a cipher!” He stared back at his paper.
Carmen suddenly gasped. All heads turned to her. “Look!” She pointed.
We all followed her finger to above Jack’s head.
“What are we looking at?” Noel whispered to Carmen as if she was scared she would scare off whatever Carmen saw.
“It’s gone!” Carmen appeared frustrated. “Wait, Jack! Look back down at the paper!”
Jack seemed skeptical at the purpose but obeyed, returning to studying the paper.
“There! Above his head!” Carmen almost stood up with excitement.
“Woah.” I breathed.
Above Jack’s head was a faint blue line, glowing about a foot long.
“I’ve seen that before!” Bryant exclaimed. “When I was in the airport control tower with Enoch. But his was about double that size.” He stretched with his arms, demonstrating the length.
“Me, too.” James spoke up quietly. “In the cockpit with David. But his was about one inch long.”
“I’ve seen it over Noel’s head all the time,” Elizabeth spoke.
“Hold on,” Noel held her hands up to interrupt the other teens who had begun talking over each other to share their own experiences. “You guys were seeing this glowing blue line over some of our heads and you didn’t think of saying something?” Her frustration showed.
The teens shrugged, regretfully.
“We thought no one would believe us. That we would sound too weird.” Bryant spoke as an advocate for everyone else.
“‘Sound too weird’?” Noel took a deep breath. “Look around us! At this point, weird is normal. Guys, please, listen. If you all see things like this speak up and tell someone. We are trapped in the middle of a nightmare. We won’t be able to get out of this if we are keeping secrets from each other! From now on, we share everything! Even if you think it isn’t that important. We are all we have left. We have to trust each other. We are in this together ok?”
