“Hey Dhalia I think we need to talk,” Kai said as he walked up to his girlfriend.
Kai was nervous. Every time he had a conversation like this it just ended up in him being upset. He felt that’s how this would end too. But he felt prepared like he could do it. It was an important part of a relationship or so he heard.
Dhalia started the conversation. Light and almost as if she didn’t know what was to come. A simple: “What did you need to talk about?”
Kai knew he had to bring it up. He welled up the courage and asked why she was avoiding him. It came out fast. As if he needed an answer to keep himself working. Rushing every word he said.
“Oh Kai, I’m sorry,” Kai heard the words he dreaded, he knew it would mean his first relationship is over.
“I’ve been thinking about us and I think I’ve just lost my feelings for you. I wasn’t contacting you because I was trying to figure myself out. I’m so sorry Kai. I think we should break up”
Break…up. Kai knew relationships can sour, he had grown up seeing that happen to his parents but he never known the horrible feeling until now. Sadness, regret, anger and so many other things. But he wouldn’t plead for Dhalia to continue to love him or not let her break up with him. He just had to let her go even though he didn’t want to.
“Okay…” Kai responded.
“Thank you for everything, you were a great boyfriend,” Dhalia replied.
Before she left she decided to give Kai one last thing. She took his face and asked.
“Can I kiss you?”
Kai didn’t know what words to say. He didn’t know why he nodded but he did. Maybe he was hoping it would mean they could get back together. Nothing would change as a kiss could really fix everything. Exactly like the fairy tales.
It was more of a peck than a kiss. Dahlia's soft lips touched his for a second then moved away. Kai didn’t know how to process it. Unlike magical feelings, stories have described or even awkwardness from what he had heard from his friends. His first kiss was bittersweet. If anything it made him miserable.
As Dahlia walked away you could see a faint smile but if you looked at Kai the dark circles around his eyes were puffy. He was crying finally letting the tears come.
Kai dried his face with his sleeve. He tried to keep himself from crying again on the walk home. He would normally walk with Daffi and the two would laugh and chat. But now, it was just him and his emotions. Kai walked like he was about to crunch up into a ball. Back hunched, legs moving slowly. No matter how he felt. Crying in the middle of the street felt embarrassing even if there would be no one passing.
Once Kai got home he let it out. Tears, writing, getting anger out. He did it all.
