Dear Daisy,
Merry Christmas, I already said that to you today. You would know this but I visited your grave. I sat there for a long time. Sometimes I cried and sometimes I would just talk and reminisce like you were still here. Every time the wind blew or a bird chirped I thought of it as you responding to my questions and giving me answers. It’s sad the first time I went to your grave since the funeral is Christmas nearly 10 months later. I dropped off my present for you. Did you see it? A pen with your name on it. You always liked those pens where there was a flower at the top and it made a “nice” sound or whatever you said. I got it near the start of the year with birthday money and some job and was going to give it to you on your birthday, but you know what happened. I finally got the courage today. I should come more often. It feels nice, I feel like I can cry and you can wrap me in an embrace again. I think I may have even smiled when reminiscing. I laughed when we talked about that time I fell off my bike and when you ate into a soft serve then somehow lost a tooth. I think I’m getting closer to acceptance. I don’t really know. Some days I feel depressed or like I’m in denial, I guess that's the effect death has on you though. I don’t write about it much in my letters but I know I haven’t come to terms with you going yet.
After that, I went to Daffi's house. Mom said she would pick me up from his but I highly doubt it. I think some stuff is happening still. But I celebrated there. We had a barbeque with sausages, ribs and chops. Everything tasted amazing. There were a few people I didn’t know there. But I did recognise Cheeto, Mark and BB. They all hung out with Daffi and me. We played a few board games. Daffis’ family has all these different ones like Catan and Carcassonne. I loved them both! Guess who won the games too? Cheeto and I. I realised Cheeto has a name but it feels more comfortable using what I always call them at the shelter. I also learnt BB and Mark are sore losers. BB tried to explain why she had actually won which was funny because she had the lowest points, while Mark just seemed grumpy. Either way, I loved playing with all of them. At some point, Daffi took me into his room and we sat alone just enjoying the sunset and talking.
He then handed me something—a present. I would have felt horrible if I didn't get something but I was prepared this time! I had gotten Daffi this thing called a “book nook” he was always going on about them and I saw one I thought Daffi would like making.
Anyways, he handed me a really badly wrapped gift. The paper had teddies with Santa hats on it but you couldn’t tell with all the crumples in the paper. You wouldn’t guess what he got me! A new diary. It’s smaller than the one you got me but on the front, it’s plain blue with a small metal daisy in the bottom right corner. I think he had it custom-made, but I didn’t want to ask.
When Daffi opened mine I swear the sun fell into his face. He started glowing from happiness. I was happy he loved it. It made me happy. So we were both happy.
Merry Christmas Daisy!
Love,
Kai
