Step one, you say we need to talk
He walks, you say sit down, it’s just a talk
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left, and you stay right
Between the lines of fear and blame
You begin to wonder why you came
Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
It was a beautiful day, as Katherine and Elijah stood in front of each other in an alleyway in Pennsylvania.
“Is that what I am to you?” he accused her. “A means of survival?”
“Of course you’re not a means of survival. You looked out for me when I had no one. You’ve given me a second chance now, when no one else will.” She rested a hand on the side of his face. “I love you. Elijah.” He turned his face away and she put her hand down. “You don’t believe me.”
He looked at her.
“I want to. It’s my disease. I just keep wanting to believe you, but how can I when, at every turn, you give me a reason to doubt you. I don’t know you. I don’t think I ever will.”
She silently watched, as he began to walk away, before catching up with him and put a hand on his arm, stopping him in his tracks.
“Wait.”
He looked at her hand and then her a couple of times and she got the hint, so she let go.
He looked at her.
“Goodbye, Katherine.”
She silently watched, as he walked away, knowing that she’d lost his trust in her for lying to him. She’d broken their agreement they’d made centuries ago. It didn’t matter what she did so long as she never lied to him. Now she knew she needed to earn his trust back somehow.
Let him know that you know best
‘Cause after all, you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you’ve told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And I pray to God he hears you
Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
That night, she found him walking down a sidewalk. She stopped him by standing in front of him.
“Wait.”
“What do you want?” he asked, though he wasn’t interested.
“To tell you that you’re right. I’ve spend so much time running and lying just to survive, I---I’m starting to believe my own lies. I don’t even remember who I was when we first met. And I want to find out.” She pulled out a box from her purse.
“You have the cure,” he stated.
“Yes. And I can shove this down Klaus’ throat and try to kill him, but even if I succeeded, I’d lose you. And I don’t want that to happen.” She set the cure in his hand. “I need you to trust me. I want you to trust me. Just like I’m trusting you. You don’t owe me anything. I’m going to let you decide where we go from here.”
He silently watched, as she walked away from him, before looking down at the cure in his hand.
*Mystic Falls-Mikaelson Mansion*
As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you’ve followed
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
Or he’ll say he’s just not the same
And you’ll begin to wonder why you came
Where did I go wrong?
I lost a friend
Somewhere along in bitterness
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
It was a dismal night at the Mikaelson mansion, as Elijah stood in front of her, having just told her that he was choosing to leave town and follow Klaus to New Orleans. He believed that Klaus may need his help to take care of whatever witches were conspiring against him. Family always came first for him, whether he wanted to sacrifice his love or not. Because he felt like he had to cut ties, he was breaking up with her; not just leaving town. He felt that this was the best thing for them, though he still loved her and always would.
“It’s our turn, Elijah. Please,” she pleaded with him, trying to get him to reconsider, but it was obviously futile, knowing how much family meant to him.
“Katerina.” He kissed her on the forehead. “Goodbye, Katerina.” Then he was gone as quick as possible, needing to get away quickly, in case he changed his mind.
She stood there, looking at the space he’d once stood, heartbroken, yet again. He always did this to her, but this time, for some reason, it felt different, as if it was the last time she’d ever see of him. She hoped that that wasn’t true. She couldn’t bear to never see Elijah ever again. She loved him with her whole heart.

Where did I go wrong?

Had I known how to save a life
How to save a life
How to save a life
It was a dismal night, as Katherine, human due to getting the cure shoved down her throat, sat in the driver seat in a nearly totaled car, very injured. She knew she should get out, but she was human and quite injured. She could feel blood on either side of her head and there was a shard of glass protruding from her lower stomach and there was another shard of glass stabbed into her thigh. Looking at it, she could tell that it had opened the artery in her thigh. She was in a lot of pain, but she’d never been one to express her pain, unless she was in the presence of Elijah during her pain. She knew she should stay awake, but it was difficult, since her vision was blurry and growing dim. She knew from this that she was probably going to die and that she most likely had a concussion or worst. She hoped that someone would find her in time and save her life. She didn’t want to die, but as an injured human, there wasn’t much she could do.

Elijah had just left the bar and was heading home, but on a desolate street, when he smelled the familiar scents he’d know anywhere, he stopped in his tracks. It confused him of why Katerina was in town, so he scanned the desolate area, only to see a nearly totaled car that was crashed into a pole with quite a lot of brute force.
He blurred to the driver side, only to find that Katerina was in there, human and injured.
“Katerina.”
He forced the car door open, since it was jammed, and stepped towards her. There was quite a lot of blood, but considering he didn’t know how she was even human, he didn’t want to chance feeding her vampire blood, just in case she couldn’t digest it. She was very pale, too. Seeing the two shards of glass, he pulled them both out and tossed them on the floorboard. He then rested gentle hands on either side of her pale face.
“Katerina, it’s me. Can you hear me?”
He didn’t get anything from her.
He put her arm around his shoulders and slid one of his behind her. Then he slid his other arm under her legs, pulling her gently into his arms and out of the wreck.
“Stay with me, Katerina. Please,” he pleaded, hoping he wasn’t too late to save her. He knew now that he was wrong to leave her, but at least he was here now, when she needed him to save her after all these centuries.
He blurred to the compound so he could ask Freya to heal her. Freya was his only other option, but he didn’t know if she’d make it. She was losing a lot more blood and was growing much more paler. He knew he was losing her, as he blurred home.
Half an hour later, he entered the compound.
“Freya!” he called, as he gently layed her down on the table and took his jacket off. He gently lifted her head and put his jacket there as a pillow for her head, before laying her head gently back down.
Freya came down the stairs quickly, assuming that something was wrong the way he’d yelled for her. She was right when she saw a very injured girl on the table. Though she didn’t know who this girl was, she could tell that he cared deeply for her; especially, after he requested for her to heal her. Freya did as told, though she could only go one or two at a time, so while she began to heal her thigh, Elijah used a towel to try and slow her lower stomach from bleeding.
As he tried to slow the bleeding with a hand on the towel, he rested a gentle hand on the side of her face.
“I’m right here, Katerina. Stay with me. I promise you. I will never leave you again,” he said, though he didn’t know if she could hear him or not, since she was getting so close to dying, because of the loss of blood.
Freya soon healed her thigh, so Elijah took the towel away and Freya began to heal her lower stomach.
Half an hour later, Freya finished healing all of her and Elijah gently picked her up in his arms, once he thanked Freya, and took Katerina to his room. He then layed her gently down in his bed and sat on her bedside, waiting for her to awaken. He rested a hand on the side of her face and another on top of her hand.
“I’m here, Katerina, and I’m not leaving again. No matter what has happened, you are not alone. I promise, I will not leave you again. You have my word on that,” he promised her, genuinely meaning every word. If anything had happened to her while he’d been here with his family, he’d never forgive himself. He shouldn’t have abandoned her or left her like he had, but he’d thought that she’d be okay without him. He knew now that he was wrong. No matter what went on, he was going to protect her as long as possible, even if that meant that he’d have to watch her grow old and die while he was still himself.
