I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn’t see how every sign pointed straight to you
Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true
That God bless the broken road
That led me straight to you
(Yes he did)
I think about the years I spent just passing through
I’d like to have the time I lost and give it back to you

It was a beautiful day in England, as Katerina Petrova and Elijah Mikaelson played chase.
She stopped running and laughed, as she said, “You’re meant to catch me.”
“Well, If I catch you, then the game will be over,” he replied, having also stopped playing chase with her.
They sat down on a bench and she suddenly looked at him, as she asked him, “True love isn’t real unless it is returned, do you agree?”
He lied, saying, “I do not believe in love, Katerina.” He knew he shouldn’t let his feelings get the better of him, even if he didn’t want her to die so Klaus could become a hybrid. There was no other way though.
“That is too sad for me to believe, my Lord. If we cease to believe in love, then why would we want to live?” she replied, not believing that he didn’t believe in love.
The night of the full moon, she found out what Klaus was going to do to her and what they were, so she took the Moonstone and ran for her life. Though Elijah cared for her, he helped search for her. He didn’t want her to die, but he also was loyal to his brother. He knew if he didn’t find her for Klaus, he’d end up with a dagger in his chest and probably in a box for a century or two.
“Katerina!” He called to her. “It’s pointless to run! Klaus will find you wherever you are!” He then said, “I know you are near. I can smell your blood.”
That night, he never found her, because she had help in escaping and because in the end, she turned herself into a vampire after Rose had healed her with her blood, thinking that she would be rid of him if she died. She didn’t expect to become a vampire though, but when she did, she took the chance and fled, only to find one night, her entire village slaughtered. She knew only one monster that would do that, but she hadn’t expected him to lash out by killing her villagers and family. After weeping over her mother, she fled so that he wouldn’t find her.

But you just smile and take my hand
You’ve been there to understand
It’s all part of a grander plan that is coming true
Every long lost dream led me to where you are
Others who broke my heart they were like Northern stars
Pointing me on my way into your loving arms
This much I know is true

It was a dismal night at the Mikaelson mansion in Mystic Falls, as Elijah stood in front of his Katerina. She was a 500 year old vampire by now whom had turned into someone that wasn’t the Katerina he had once known. Vampirism had changed her and now he was finally seeing how much she had changed in the last 500 years. She had lied to him in Pennsylvania earlier tonight, but she had at least handed the cure over to him and wanted him to decide where they stood. He hadn’t decided yet, but he felt like he, once again, had to choose family over her. He hated that he was breaking her heart yet again so, thinking that she’d be just fine as always on her own, and believing that he’d come back for her when he could, he knew there was one way to protect her. Or so that’s what he thought he was doing. He had to follow Niklaus to New Orleans to help him with whatever witch problem he was dealing with there, so Elijah couldn’t be here for her. He had to keep her away from Klaus just as he always had though, so he was doing the one thing he hated to do to her. This was his way to protect her and give them both some space to think things through.
“Elijah, please. It’s our turn,” she pleaded with him, once he’d told her that he was following Klaus to New Orleans to help him with the witches.
He didn’t have much to say except for, “Katerina.” He kissed her on the forehead. “Goodbye, Katerina.” Then he was gone in a blur. He had to get away quickly so that he wouldn’t change his mind and go back. It hurt them both, but he was the moral one and family always came first for him. He had to sacrifice love for his family. Even if he hated doing it.

That God bless the broken road
That led me straight to you
Yeah
Now I’m just rolling home
Into my lover’s arms
This much I know is true
That God bless the broken road
That led me straight to you
That God bless the broken road
That led me straight to you

It was a dismal night in New Orleans, as a human Katherine stumbled out of the car she’d just crashed into a pole, injured. She couldn’t stay in the wrecked car, for fear that a not so friendly vampire would come across her and probably come after her. She’d crashed her car when she’d come to town after escaping Silas and Damon. Silas had tried to drown her and Damon had gotten her out of the house, but then he’d tried to hand her over to Silas. She didn’t know why, but she wasn’t going to stick around Mystic Falls to find out why. So she’d drove a car she’d stolen off the Mystic Falls streets to New Orleans, knowing that though Klaus was in town, there was one person that she could always count on. Even though she’d gotten herself in the mess of being a human by Elena shoving the cure down her throat when Katherine had tried to kill her, she knew Elijah wouldn’t want her to die. She knew that even though his family came first, he’d never let her die if he could help it. He’d saved her before, time and time again.
As she limped out of the car, she put a hand on the door to try and get her balance, even though as an injured human, it was a little hard to. Then she began to limp away from the car crash, each step hurting and her vision blurry. She knew she was losing a lot of blood and was very injured, but being herself, she wasn’t going to give up the fight. She had to find Elijah. She knew he’d help her any way that he could.
Elijah was walking through town, having just left the bar to head home. He had needed to have a few drinks after finding out that his former witch lover, Celeste, had resurrected and was after him and his family in vengeance. She apparently wanted to teach him the “error of” his “ways.” She didn’t like the fact that no matter what Klaus did, he always stood by him, all because of a vow he and his family had kept for 1,000 years. Elijah knew he had to be ready, because he knew how powerful she had been in her day and with the Harvest girls having yet to all resurrect, Celeste had unlimited power. There was no telling what she’d do, no matter how well he had once known her.
After a while of walking, he saw a car crashed into a pole in a desolate area not far from the woods. He could smell the scents of human, Katerina, and blood but didn’t see her anywhere near the crash site. So, curious of why she was in town and what had happened, he followed her scent and the blood trail. He’d never thought he’d ever see her in the same town as Klaus. Mystic Falls had been an exception since she’d been there before he and his family had come to town. He needed to know what she was doing here. He had enough past lover troubles. If she was here to cause any trouble like she sometimes had a habit of doing, he needed to set her straight. He didn’t have much time to deal with whatever she may have in store if she was here to cause trouble.
When he finally found her, he realized that the reason he’d thought she’d been here for had been wrong. She wasn’t here to cause trouble. She was in no condition to do so. He knew now that she’d come to town for his help. There was no other reason that a human and injured Katerina would be in town.
He blurred to her side, where she lay on the forest floor in the heart of the woods on her back.
“Katerina.”
He gently pulled her into his arms. He bit his wrist and put it to her lips, though he didn’t know if it would work or not, since he didn’t know how she was even human in the first place. He made a little bit go down her throat to see if it would work, but it didn’t when he realized that she couldn’t digest it.
He got to his feet with her in his arms and blurred home. He couldn’t lose her. He wouldn’t let her die if he had any say in the matter. They didn’t have a working hospital though, so he had to go to the one person that despised her. He knew she despised her, but he also knew that she could save her and would if he asked her to do so. She knew how much he loved her and she also knew what it felt like to lose someone you love one way or another. She’d understand and help him save Katerina’s life.
“Stay with me, Katerina. Don’t leave me,” he pleaded, though he didn’t know if she could hear him or not, since she wasn’t awake.
Once home, he gently layed her down in his bed and, upon his request, Rebekah took care of her wounds and did what she could for her.
Afterward, Rebekah left the room and Elijah sat down on Katerina’s bedside, waiting for her to awaken, though he doubted that she’d wake up anytime soon.
He rested a gentle hand on her left one and his other on the side of her face.
“I’m so sorry, Katerina. I should’ve made sure you were okay.”
In the end, she recovered fully and she and Elijah got back together, so they stayed in New Orleans together.
