“Mom” I call out as I return back to the house, Matthew in tow. He put on a button up shirt and some chinos. Not a bad boy leather jacket in sight. No smoking either he told me, he doesn’t want to smell like a delinquent. I laughed telling him my own father used to smoke and he smiles sticking to his guns. It’s clear he wants my mom to like him, and with a smile like that he really has nothing to worry about.

She goes on about my dance achievements, even showing him the pictures on the fridge of me at various competitions. He smiles at each one and I try not to laugh. Once we’ve finished eating she makes us all some tea and then gives us some space.

It’s hugely humid and hot today and I cannot face jeans, I pull out a pale yellow cami dress. It has small white flowers on it and it’s unlike the more edgy clothes that the girls normally wear, but I love it. I remind myself of Rachel’s fluorescent green boob tube and cringe. Spritzing myself with perfume, I scrunch my curls in waves and turn to face him.

Matthew takes me food shopping on the way home, and even the most mundane of things seems exciting merely because he is with me. He quizzes me on what snacks I like, which I find undeniably cute. He gets my chocolate and some drinks to take back with us.
