You’d always been curious about Sanji’s…unique features.
Honestly, the presence of a halo and wings had been easier to swallow than you’d thought. Angels and demons are real? Well…that explained a few things, like how he could almost miraculously be somewhere nearby any time you thought about him. Or the insanely quick healing. You’d never recalled a person recovering from a broken bone in a matter of days.
He’d been pleasantly surprised when you didn’t freak out upon learning what he was. He’d even hugged you with such an intensity, you were certain your acceptance of him meant more than you could possibly know.
And so you’d continued on with your life, content with the knowledge that your good friend was an angel.
There were many perks to being friends with an angel, you’d discovered. He could come to you at a moment’s notice, could always hear you whenever you called, and he could even help you heal faster with his angelic aura.
You’d never known a kinder man, and whether or not that was just because he was an angel or within his nature, you couldn’t be sure. Your gut instinct told you that was just who Sanji was.
After you discovered his secret, it seemed as if he wanted to spend even more time with you. Your apartment became a place when he could shed his human disguise and free his wings. He’d told you several times how uncomfortable it could be to suppress his wings, and he always seemed more relaxed in the privacy of your home.
The way he smiled at you, as if you were the angel…your heart would always skip a beat.
Over time, however, you began to notice things were changing. The golden halo that encircled his head suddenly cracked. It had happened while you were watching a movie together, the sound startling you and him both.
“Are you ok?” You’d asked, eyeing the uneven circle of gold just above his head with worry. He’d only smiled and laughed it off.
“Oh, that can happen sometimes. It’s no big deal.”
“Can’t you go back to heaven and get it fixed?”
“I guess, but…I want to finish the movie with you! Let’s keep watching.”
He’d coaxed you back to the movie, and before long the incident was forgotten about. However, the sight of his broken halo became a familiar one. He never did go up to heaven to have it fixed.
And then the feathers. You began noticing them in places he frequented. A stray white feather or two would be left behind after he left your apartment, or around his restaurant where he worked. He could easily attribute it to be the pigeons that populated the city if strangers asked, but you knew better.
“Is it normal for an angel to lose feathers?” You asked over some takeout one day, eyeing his wings with concern. There were a few patches where several had been lost close together.
“We shed sometimes, yeah. It’s not a problem, Y/N. Tell me how your day was!” He’d flashed you a wide smile, and despite wondering if he’d been telling you the entire truth, you let it go. There was a lot you still didn’t know about angels, after all.
It was the darkening of his wing’s tips that really was the final straw. The once pure-white colors of his wings had began to darken to gray, and then black at the tips. You confronted him about it, locking the bedroom door and sitting him down without giving a chance to leave.
“What is going on with you? Are you sick? First your halo and then your wings…I’m really worried, Sanji.” You say, standing in front of him with crossed arms. “Tell me what’s really going on.”
“Y/N, everything’s fine-”
“Sanji. Please.” You plead, frowning to show that you know he’s not telling the truth. “Just tell me.”
His expression turned sad, and for a moment he didn’t respond. He looked away, thinking about what to say, before giving a small sigh. “I’m…turning human.”
“What?” Your brows shoot upwards in shock. “How is that possible?”
“I was cast from heaven,” he continued, eyes downcast, “for breaking angelic law.”
“But…that’s ridiculous! You’re the sweetest guy I’ve ever met, you would never hurt a fly, you care about everyone around you-”
“It’s not for hurting anyone. That’s not the issue.” Sanji shook his head, still refusing to look at you. “I…disobeyed the oldest of heaven’s laws. I fell in love with a human.”
“Why is that against the law? How would that harm anyone?”
“You have to understand, Y/N. The offspring of a human and an angel are blasphemous creatures. It is forbidden to produce one.”
“Falling in love isn’t a bad thing.” You say, approaching a little closer and placing your hands on his shoulders. “Heaven doesn’t know what they’re doing, casting out a man as amazing as you.”
He looks up at you, again as if you were the angel instead of him. He says nothing, just watches you with such admiration and…something more. You heart skipped a beat, but you swallowed and continued.
“I’m so sorry this is happening to you. You don’t deserve to be thrown out of heaven, it’s a stupid law.”
“Y/N-”
“Whoever you fell for…they’re the luckiest person alive. And I hope that…even if you can’t be an angel anymore, you can still be happy as a human.” You smile, trying your best to be supportive, even if there was nothing you could actually do to help.
“It’s you.” He whispered, reaching up to cup your cheek with his palm. “You’re the reason I fell, Y/N. You’re the one I fell in love with.”
“Sanji-”
“I don’t care if I become a human. If I’m able to be with you, I’ll rip off these wings and discard everything I once was.” He said, a smile, the love in his eyes nearly making you cry. His thumbs brushed against your cheek softly.
“I…love you too.” You say, earning you a relieved laugh from his throat.
He swept in to place a soft kiss against your lips. It was sweet and gentle, and everything you’d hoped for. He pulled away, leaning his forehead against yours.
“You are worth falling for. And if I had to do it all again, I would. A thousand times over. I may be the angel–or whatever is left of one–but you’re my saving grace, Y/N.”
